Fake Death, Real Glow-Up

"You have no right to stand in front of me, Matthew." I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. My voice trembled, yet it carried unshakable resolve. He lunged at me, eyes bloodshot. I sidestepped. He stumbled and fell to the ground in embarrassment. "Jennifer, I know I was wrong! Whitney has been brought to justice, and my mom... she also..." "Shut up!" I cut him off sharply. "Your mom and Whitney got exactly what they deserved. But what about Mia? What about my child? Who's going to pay for that?" He froze where he stood. His Adam's apple bobbed, his voice hoarse. "I'll spend the rest of my life atoning for my sins, okay? Please give me one more chance." I let out a laugh, but tears streamed down my face. "A chance? The chance was gone the moment you called me disgusting, the moment you treated me like a baby-making tool." He suddenly scrambled to his feet, staring at me intensely. His tone was eerie and urgent. "You think what happened back then was all Whitney's idea? Jennifer, you're wrong—" "What do you mean?" My heart skipped a beat. But he paused. A bitter smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Chapter 1 of "Fake Death, Real Glow-Up"

My name is Jennifer Scott, and I have been married to Matthew Lewis for just over three months. "The company is sending you on a business trip to the neighboring city for one month, starting tomorrow." The voice of the department manager came through the phone, leaving no room for doubt. I held the mobile phone, hesitated for a moment, and looked at Matthew, who was reviewing documents on the sofa. I lowered my voice and asked, "Is there any chance you can send someone else? I just got married recently..." "This is the company's decision. You are the only one familiar with this project." The manager interrupted me, "Your salary will be doubled, and the allowance will remain the same." After hanging up, I crouched down in front of Matthew. "Matthew, the company wants me to go on a business trip to the neighboring city for a month. I leave tomorrow." He put down his pen and gently stroked my hair. "How long will you be gone? Do you want me to take you?" "A month. No need to trouble you; I can manage on my own." I rested my head on his lap. "Take good care of yourself. Call me anytime if you need anything." He pulled me into his arms. "If you need anything, just have the assistant bring it over." I thought this was just a routine business trip, but I never imagined this place would mark the beginning of a nightmare.
