I stared at the photo of the prenatal checkup form on my phone screen, my fingertips icy cold. Today was the day of the scheduled prenatal checkup, but Jason Lynn went with Lucy Scott instead. "I've scheduled the surgery for next Wednesday." After sending the appointment message to the hospital, I tossed my phone onto the sofa. Fragments of past memories flooded my mind, all deliberately aimed at me by Lucy Scott. The last time I made soup for Jason Lynn, Lucy said there was something wrong with it and smashed a bowl right in front of me. "Grace, Lucy's health is fragile, so don't take it personally." There have been countless times like this. Every time Lucy plays the victim and acts weak, Jason is always on her side. This child shouldn't come to a place so full of bias and coldness. The day before the surgery, I packed a simple bag and went to the hospital alone. When I was registering for the hospital stay, the nurse asked about my family. "I came by myself." I forced a smile, trying to hide the bitterness deep in my eyes. The ward was very quiet, with only the sound of the patient breathing in the bed beside me. I took out my phone and went through my contacts; there were no messages or calls from Jason Lynn. He was probably still with Lucy Scott, having long ago forgotten about the prenatal checkup. On the day of the surgery, I lay on the hospital bed, staring up at the shadowless lamp on the ceiling. The doctor quietly asked if I was sure, and I closed my eyes and nodded. The anesthetic slowly took effect, and before my consciousness blurred, I had only one thought: to end it all. When I woke up, I was still alone in the hospital ward.
