Freshly Divorced, Already Spoiled

Lucy leaned in Jason's arms, shaking the phone—its screen showed my pregnancy test report. "Grace, what do you think Jason will feel when he finds out you're pregnant and hid your gastric cancer diagnosis?" I clenched the diagnosis tightly. "You took my phone on purpose?" Jason frowned and pushed me away. "Grace, Lucy's worried about you! Why didn't you say anything about the gastric cancer?" "Worried about me?" I laughed out loud. "She's afraid I'll hold onto my place, afraid this baby will shatter her hopes!" Lucy's eyes reddened as she clung to Jason. "I didn't... I just don't want Jason to be dragged down by you." "Dragged down?" I stared straight at Jason. "You accompanied her for pointless check-ups and forgot my pregnancy test appointment. How dare you ask why I didn't tell you?" Jason was lost for words, yet he still shielded Lucy. "Focus on your treatment first. We'll talk about the baby later." I turned to leave, but Lucy shouted sharply after me: "Grace, watch your step! I still have dirt on your parents' company!" My steps froze. I turned back to her. "How dare you touch my parents?" She curled her lips into a cold smile. "Do you think Jason will believe you—or what I have in my hands?"

Chapter 1 of "Freshly Divorced, Already Spoiled"

I stared at the photo of the prenatal checkup form on my phone screen, my fingertips icy cold. Today was the day of the scheduled prenatal checkup, but Jason Lynn went with Lucy Scott instead. "I've scheduled the surgery for next Wednesday." After sending the appointment message to the hospital, I tossed my phone onto the sofa. Fragments of past memories flooded my mind, all deliberately aimed at me by Lucy Scott. The last time I made soup for Jason Lynn, Lucy said there was something wrong with it and smashed a bowl right in front of me. "Grace, Lucy's health is fragile, so don't take it personally." Jason Lynn frowned and helped Lucy Scott up, without even a single question. At that moment, I just felt my heart sink. With a hoarse voice, I asked him, "Can't you believe me just once?" "Lucy Scott has no reason to lie to me." His words were like needles, piercing me into silence. And the last time I lost an important document, Lucy cried and said she had accidentally dropped it. Jason Lynn just brushed it off and told her to be more careful next time. But then he turned to me and snapped, "Why didn't you put the document away properly and let Lucy suffer?" There have been countless times like this. Every time Lucy plays the victim and acts weak, Jason is always on her side. This child shouldn't come to a place so full of bias and coldness. The day before the surgery, I packed a simple bag and went to the hospital alone. When I was registering for the hospital stay, the nurse asked about my family. "I came by myself." I forced a smile, trying to hide the bitterness deep in my eyes. The ward was very quiet, with only the sound of the patient breathing in the bed beside me. I took out my phone and went through my contacts; there were no messages or calls from Jason Lynn. He was probably still with Lucy Scott, having long ago forgotten about the prenatal checkup. On the day of the surgery, I lay on the hospital bed, staring up at the shadowless lamp on the ceiling. The doctor quietly asked if I was sure, and I closed my eyes and nodded. The anesthetic slowly took effect, and before my consciousness blurred, I had only one thought: to end it all. When I woke up, I was still alone in the hospital ward. Sharp pains radiated from my abdomen, but what hurt more than my body was the emptiness inside me.
