Chapter 1 of "He Dropped Dead After I Left"
My fingers whitened as I gripped the divorce agreement; Ethan James sat across from me on the leather sofa.
Sherry Lewis stood at his side, her hand resting lightly on his shoulder.
"Charlotte, stop deceiving people describing yourself blessed by the Lucky Star." Ethan's voice cut through the air like the cold of a deep winter. "Sherry even told me you made up this nonsense just to cling to the position of the Young Mistress of the James family."
I stared at him, the scene from three months ago unfolding before my eyes.
That day, the temple bell was swallowed by raging flames. When my tutor, Master Larry pushed me out of the inferno, the monk's robe on his back had already burned to a charred black. And my Senior Disciple Matthew clutched my Junior Disciple Mike's lifeless body, screaming at me to run at once.
And the mastermind behind all of this is the very man before me.
He said those people "evil spirits," claiming they used the fake auspicious fate to trap me and obstruct him from being with his "true love."
"Divorce is fine." I lifted my head, my voice so calm it felt alien even to myself. "But Ethan, mark this well: today, you have cast aside the only person who could suppress your cursed fate with the Jinx."
He sneered, grabbed the pen, and signed his name swiftly. The scratch of the pen on paper sounded like the relentless countdown to his end.
I took the signed agreement, folded it neatly, and slipped it into my bag.
At that moment, Ethan suddenly emitted a muffled groan, clutching his chest with both hands, his face immediately turning deathly pale.
Outside, the sky had darkened without warning; a shadowy mist slipped through the crack beneath the door, seeping directly into his body.
"You... what have you done?" He pointed at me, his voice trembling.
I said nothing, simply watching him silently.
Suddenly, the cell phone on the table rang. Ethan's assistant called, her voice trembling with tears: "Mr. James, the medical test results are out. It's terminal stomach cancer, and... liver cancer as well. The doctor said... it has already spread."
The cell phone slipped from Ethan's hand, crashing onto the carpet with a sharp "thud."
He slumped onto the sofa, eyes vacant as he stared at me, as if seeing me for the very first time.
