Chapter 1 of "Reborn to Right My Wrongs"

My name is Jennifer Tillman. In my past life, I made the gravest mistake of my life. I ran away from my marriage. The one I fled from marrying was Jonas Black, the heir of the Black Family. The person I wanted to marry was my childhood friend, Theodore Donald. At that time, my eyes and heart were filled only with Theodore. I always felt that Jonas Black's personality was cold and indifferent; he would never treat me well. But I forgot that one can never truly know what lies in another one's heart. In the first year of marriage, Theodore treated me reasonably well. But in the second year, everything changed. He began staying out late, and when he came home, there was always the unfamiliar scent of perfume on him. I questioned him about it, but he simply said I was overthinking. Until the day he brought home a young woman. The woman's name was Beth Xavier; she looked fragile and pitiful. Theodore Donald said, "From now on, you will care for Beth as if you were attending to your master." I was stunned at that moment. I am his wife, not a maid in his household. I refused. I thought he would remember our past and retract his order. But I was wrong. Not only did he not withdraw his order, he became angry. He said I was ungrateful and that Beth's background was tragic, so I should give her more leeway. I still refused. During the argument, he struck me. He was very strong, and I was completely unable to fight back. I still remember the sound of bones breaking. That sound was clear and piercing. My arms and legs were broken by him just like that. I lay on the ground, writhing in unbearable pain. Yet he didn't even glance in my direction. Later, he sold me to the old widower in the village. The old widower was very old and had a foul temper. After I arrived at his home, life was even harsher than with the Donald Family. He beat me every day and refused to give me enough to eat. The wounds on my body hadn't healed, and new ones kept appearing. I thought about ending my life. But I didn't even have the strength to die. The endless torment had driven me completely mad. I began to babble incoherently and hid whenever I saw anyone. Until that day, when the old widower beat me again. I stared at the hammer lying in the corner. Summoning some unknown strength, I crawled over. I grabbed the hammer and struck the old widower's head. Again and again, until he ceased breathing. Clutching the hammer, I stumbled out. I didn't know where to go; I simply wandered aimlessly. I do not know how long I had been walking when I saw a familiar mansion. It was the Black Mansion. Driven by some inexplicable impulse, I walked toward it. The young servant at the door recognized me. He was momentarily stunned, then hurried inside to report. Jonas Black's mother came out. Seeing me in this state, her eyes filled with tears. She held my hand and asked where I had been all these years. I opened my mouth but could not say a word. She sighed and told me a piece of news. Jonas Black was no longer alive. He died in sorrow two years after I fled the marriage. When I heard the news, it felt as if I had been struck by lightning. I simply could not believe it. His mother even said that Jonas Black never forgot me until the day he died. He even wrote my name into the Black Family genealogy. At that moment, all my reason collapsed. I knelt at the gates of the Black Family, crying with heartbreaking anguish. I regretted it. But it was all too late.
