The Maid's Deception

I opened my eyes to blinding white light; my head felt as heavy as lead. I stared at the unfamiliar room, my mind completely blank; I had no idea who I was or why I was here. On the bedside table, there was a chipped enamel cup and a faded gray cloth dress. The fabric was as rough as sandpaper, which only made this strange place feel even more alien. A woman in a deep blue nanny uniform pushed the door open. She looked about forty, her thick foundation couldn't hide the fine lines around her eyes or the cruelty lurking beneath. Her gaze was icy, thick with disdain, and it sent a chill straight through me. Her voice was sharp, like nails scraping glass, and she snapped at me, "If you're awake, get up and work. Don't pretend to be dead!" That voice stabbed at my eardrums, making them ache. I wanted to ask who she was, where I was, but before I could say a word, she grew impatient. She stepped forward and shoved me hard. I nearly tumbled off the bed, my hand hitting the bed frame, the sharp wood cutting into my skin painfully. She stood with her hands on her hips, spitting so close it almost hit my face, yelling, "What are you wasting time for? Mr. Carter is waiting for breakfast. Do you want everyone to starve?" I stumbled to my feet, my whole body feeling like it'd been torn apart and awkwardly stitched back together—every move shooting pain through me. I glanced down at the old pajamas I was wearing, then at the rag in her hand, and quietly asked, "Who am I?" She let out a cold, mocking laugh, then grabbed the rag from the table and slapped it hard across my face. The rough fabric left a red mark on my cheek as she snarled, "You're the nanny hired here—Melissa Shaw! Forgot who you are after a nap? Just looking for an excuse to slack off, huh?" I caught the rag stained with grease, my mind full of questions, but I didn't dare ask any more — afraid she might hit me again, and scared that maybe I really was the lazy nanny she said I was. I followed her into the kitchen. The floor was tiled in off-white ceramic, the cabinets shining as if freshly polished—everything looked neat and tidy. I stood in the middle of the kitchen like an intruder, completely unable to blend into this place. A man sat at the dining table, dressed in a perfectly ironed light gray shirt, his hair slicked back carefully, with a silver ring shining on his hand. He was staring down at the newspaper. When he heard footsteps, he looked up at me, and the disgust in his eyes was worse than how you'd look at a nanny, like I was some filthy thing. The man set the newspaper down, his fingers tapping lightly on the table with a sharp, clear sound. His voice carried a command that wasn't up for debate: "What's taking so long? Where's breakfast?" I quickly replied, "I'm on it," then scrambled over to the stove, all flustered and clumsy. But I had no idea where the rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, or vinegar were kept, so I had to open every single cabinet, one by one, searching. Looking at the neatly arranged cutlery and ingredients inside, my mind went completely blank—I didn't know where to start.
